Analyzing one-way experiments: a piece of cake of a pain in the neck? Scientia Agricola
Kozak,Marcin.
Statistics may be intricate. In practical data analysis many researchers stick to the most common methods, not even trying to find out whether these methods are appropriate for their data and whether other methods might be more useful. In this paper I attempt to show that when analyzing even simple one-way factorial experiments, a lot of issues need to be considered. A classical method to analyze such data is the analysis of variance, quite likely the most often used statistical method in agricultural, biological, ecological and environmental studies. I suspect this is why this method is quite often applied inappropriately: since the method is that common, it does not require too much consideration-this is how some may think. An incorrect analysis may...

Data transformation: an underestimated tool by inappropriate use Agronomy
Ribeiro-Oliveira, João Paulo; Santana, Denise Garcia de; Pereira, Vanderley José; Santos, Carlos Machado dos.
There are researchers who do not recommend data transformation arguing it causes problems in inferences and mischaracterises data sets, which can hinder interpretation. There are other researchers who consider data transformation necessary to meet the assumptions of parametric models. Perhaps the largest group of researchers who make use of data transformation are concerned with experimental accuracy, which provokes the misuse of this tool. Considering this, our paper offer a study about the most frequent situations related to data transformation and how this tool can impact ANOVA assumptions and experimental accuracy. Our database was obtained from measurements of seed physiology and seed technology. The coefficient of variation cannot be used as an...

Experimental precision in corn trials using the Papadakis method Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Storck,Lindolfo; Lopes,Sidinei José; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal'Col; Toebe,Marcos.
The objective of this work was to verify whether the use of the Papadakis method in competing corn hybrid trials would lead to modifications in the validity of assumptions for the mathematical model of variance analysis and for experimental precision indicators. To achieve this, corn-grain-yield data from 25 competing corn hybrid trials, performed in a design of complete randomized blocks, were examined. Each trial entailed verification of assumptions, variance analysis, hypothesis tests, statistics to identify experimental precision, and analysis using the Papadakis method. This method improves experimental precision indicators. The assumptions were valid for both analysis types (without Papadakis and with Papadakis). Mean figures for the Fasoulas...
